Fair warning, this one is heavier than the first book. Moriarty is still funny, and there are still parents behaving appallingly at school events, but the crime at the center of this one is uglier and closer to the bone.

What Big Little Truths Is About
It is ten years on. The kindergarteners from that trivia night are in high school now. Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Renata and Bonnie are all still here, all still tangled up in each other's lives, and in the trenches of raising teenagers.
Then, on a spring morning, a yellow envelope arrives at the high school principal's office.
There is a severed finger inside it.

The investigation opens. Detective Chief Inspector Adrian Quinlan takes the case, and yes, that is the same Adrian Quinlan from the trivia night investigation ten years ago. He has been promoted. Inside the envelope he finds a hidden label bearing a name: Melody Montclair, the school's new history teacher.
The new principal, Dr. Ferdinand Seawright, has a very bad spring.
Meanwhile, everybody's life is on fire. This is the part Moriarty is best at.
Madeline turns fifty with a frozen shoulder and a lump in her breast she has told nobody about. Her husband Ed is fighting Stage 4 lymphoma. Her eldest, Abigail, is getting married and pregnant and generating a great deal of drama, and Madeline is deeply skeptical of her fiancé Luka. Her mother Iris breaks a hip and falls victim to an online scam.
Jane works as an accountant and is married to Tom now. He wants a baby. She does not, or cannot, and the reason is a birth trauma she has never fully told him about.
Celeste is raising two teenage boys who are testing every boundary they can find. Josh stops going to school entirely.
Renata is post-divorce and dating, her mother has died, and she is a property developer now. She takes up motorcycling and starts something with Brody, a local fitness trainer and artist.
Bonnie is a yoga teacher carrying ten years of guilt and PTSD from pushing Perry Wright off that balcony.
Who Are Melody and Seth Montclair?
Melody Montclair arrives as the school's new history teacher and quickly builds a reputation as gifted and unconventional. Parents love her. She earns Celeste's genuine gratitude by coaxing Josh back into the classroom when nobody else could.
She and her younger husband Seth are running a scheme.
Melody identifies teenage girls who are isolated or vulnerable, spends time building trust with them, and then presents them to Seth. Seth's method is a lie about himself: he claims he cannot read, and needs private adult literacy tutoring. A girl agrees to help him. The tutoring sessions become the cover for everything that follows.
The girls do not experience it as a scheme. That is the horror of it. Chloe Mackenzie, Madeline's daughter, is the current target, and Chloe believes she is in a real relationship with a grown man who "needs her". She has no idea she is only one in a long line of victims.
How the Teenagers Take Them Down
The break comes from outside. Marco, a retired software developer, moves to Pirriwee, and he did not move there by accident. He tells Celeste that Melody and Seth did this to his daughter Betty.
Chloe, Amabella, Skye, Ziggy, Max and Josh band together and steal Seth's laptop. They find what is on it and build a documentary featuring past victims speaking for themselves.
At the school's History Showcase, in front of everyone, they play it.
The room comes apart. Melody and Seth run. The next morning their car crashes. Melody survives with a severe spinal injury, and both of them face extensive criminal charges.
Who Sent the Severed Finger?
Clara Long. A former student of Melody's.
Clara's best friend had been one of the girls, and had been silenced about it. Clara was furious that nothing happened, that no one looked, that the whole thing simply covered up. She works at a crematorium so she cut the finger from a corpse, a deceased man named Ewan Drew, and mailed it to the principal's office for one reason. To force the investigation that nobody was going to open otherwise.
It worked. That is the uncomfortable thing about it. A grotesque act by a young woman who felt she had no other options left is the only reason any of this came to light.
Big Little Truths Ending Explained
The Montclairs are caught, publicly. Melody will spend her life with the consequences of that crash. Both face the courts.
And then Moriarty does what she did the first time, which is refuse to end on the crime. The last stretch of the book is about what the women's lives look like after.
Madeline. The lump is benign. Ed's cancer goes into remission. Luka turns out to be exactly the kind of person who shows up when things are hard, and he wins her over by simply caring for her daughter.
Jane. She finally tells Tom about her birth trauma, out loud, the whole thing. And then she books a solo trip to Germany.
Celeste. She stays with Marco. Consider what it means that the man she ends up with is a father who came to Pirriwee to protect other people's daughters.
Renata. The motorcycle, Brody, her own money, her own time. She is having a great deal more fun than anyone expected.
Bonnie. She goes to rehab, and she starts family therapy with Skye and Nathan. Ten years of carrying that balcony finally gets processed so the healing can begin.
Mary-Louise Jean Wright. Perry's mother learns that her cognitive decline was medication fog, not what everyone assumed. She gets herself back.
Ziggy. He learns his father's history. And then he helps make the documentary that stops a man from doing what was done to his mother to other girls.

My Honest Take
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ | Contemporary Fiction | Mystery | Book Club
4.5 stars. Not quite as good as the first one, and I will get to that, but I want to start with the two things I have not stopped thinking about.
The kids solving it works completely. I know some people will push back on that and I could not disagree more. Children are not held back by the same fears and prejudices adults are. They have not learned to calculate what speaking up is going to cost them. The adults in Pirriwee have had ten years of practice at closing ranks and looking the other way.
Clara is the wildest thing in this book. Sit with the actual thought process for a second. I am going to cut the finger off a dead man, mail it to the principal, and hope the investigation it kicks off uncovers this completely other thing. That is quite a take. It is grotesque, slightly unhinged, and it worked so well.
And then there is the writing. Moriarty takes on genuinely heavy material without flinching and still makes you laugh and smile between crying sessions. I am not an avid crime or thriller reader. But when they are really good I do enjoy them, and this is really good.
So, is it as good as Big Little Lies? No, not quite but that is quite the bar.

Start with more Moriarty. Here One Moment is her strangest and most ambitious, a woman on a delayed flight who calmly tells every passenger how and when they will die. Apples Never Fall is the closest tonal cousin to this book: a family, a missing mother, and four adult children who each have a reason to suspect their father. The Husband's Secret if you want the one that most resembles Big Little Lies, three women and a letter that was never supposed to be opened.
For the small town closing ranks. Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, for a community that would rather manage a scandal than face it, and the mothers on both sides of it. Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughan, for the institutional version, a privileged man and everyone with a reason to look away. None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell, for a woman who talks her way into a family and dismantles it from inside.
For the mothers. Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight is the one I would hand a reader who cannot stop thinking about Chloe: a mother going through her teenage daughter's phone and school and finding out how little she knew. The Push by Ashley Audrain, for motherhood as genuine dread. And Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth, the closest Australian sister to Moriarty, funny and vicious in the same paragraph.
If the teenagers were your favorite part. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson and One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus both run on the same engine as Chloe and Amabella and Josh, which is that teenagers investigate without first calculating what it will cost them. Both are YA and both are a great crossover for a reader who does not usually go there.

Is Big Little Truths as good as Big Little Lies?
Close, but not quite. I gave it 4.5 stars against a 5 for the first book. The mystery is strong and the writing is exceptional, but Big Little Lies remains the sharper novel. That is a very high bar to fall slightly short of.
