Daggermouth is 40 chapters long and it moves between Greyson in the Heart, Shadera in the Boundary, and Jameson out with the rebels. This is every chapter in order, from the execution that opens the book to the last line in the plaza.

Daggermouth Chapter-by-Chapter Summary
Chapters 1 to 7
Chapter 1: Mercy Is Dead
Greyson Serel stands behind two condemned rebels while the Heart turns out to watch, and the whole thing goes out on a broadcast so the outer rings have to watch too. He recites the execution order from memory because his father drilled it into him as a child.
The rebels choose how they die. Greyson hesitates before he fires, which he knows will cost him. Back at Serel Tower he takes off the mask the law requires in public, packs medication to smuggle out to the rings, and gets summoned by his father. The punishment for one second of hesitation is an arranged marriage to Moraine Daunt in five days.
Chapter 2: The Boundary
Shadera Kael walks into the Wolf's Head to report a finished job and collect the next one. The target is Greyson. The fee would fund the Daggermouths for a long time and feed a lot of Boundary families. Jaeger Nolin tells her not to underestimate him.
Walking home through streets that empty when people recognise her, she thinks about the Veyra and about her parents' execution, and decides she will kill Greyson with a stolen Veyra gun, because the symmetry matters to her.
Chapter 3: Ask No Questions
Greyson goes to Callum Thane's club, which Callum runs openly and illegally because he can. Callum tells him he is not his father. They talk about the marriage, which everyone understands is a loyalty display, and about the two rebels executed for loving across castes.
Callum says love has taken down empires. At the family dinner afterwards, Elara wears her mask even in private, and when Greyson asks about Brooker, Maximus refuses to look for his son's killer and hits Elara to end the conversation. Lira tells Greyson she wants to help him find the Daggermouth who did it.
Chapter 4: Don't Die
Jameson Vine comes to the warehouse Shadera lives in. They have sex, fast and hard, and she keeps every emotional door shut. Afterwards he tells her the Greyson contract will get her killed, and then tells her he is falling in love with her, which she advises him against.
He is hurt she was going to leave without saying anything. He asks her to refuse the job. She will not. After she goes, he thinks about what killing Greyson would actually do to New Found Haven, and hopes she survives it.
Chapter 5: Close Calls
Shadera moves between rings through the maintenance tunnels, killing the gang members who prey on people travelling illegally, and does not think twice about it. She climbs an elevator shaft and nearly gets crushed, and enjoys it, because almost dying is the closest she gets to feeling alive. She slips into the Heart through an underground garage and never notices Greyson hiding in the same garage smuggling antibiotics out. He straps the medicine to a Boundary-bound truck, runs into Captain Mikel, who saw him hesitate at the execution, and gets home dreading the wedding. He sends for Maya.
Chapter 6: Do Not Hesitate
Greyson is awake before dawn preparing for another execution and hating that his hesitation is what bought him a wife. He says he cannot stand firmly on either side of his own life. It is worse this morning, because the man he is about to kill smuggled medicine, which is the crime Greyson commits every week.
Shadera watches the whole thing through a rifle scope. She means to take the shot and instead falls into the memory of her parents' execution, and decides she wants him close enough to touch.
Chapter 7: Do It
Greyson paces before the ceremony wondering whether Brooker ever hated the family the way he does. Shadera is in the air vents watching him. She drops into the room and they fight, and they are evenly matched enough that they start taunting each other mid-fight. He puts a knife in her stomach. She puts a bullet in his. She lines up the last shot, and he takes off his mask, which is a capital crime, and then the Veyra soldiers come through the door.
What this stretch is doing: Wolfe spends the opening on one idea: the executioner is also a prisoner. Greyson enforces the regime and is crushed by it in the same scene, and Shadera arrives certain the Heart is simply the enemy. Both of them are wrong, which is what the rest of the book is for.
Chapters 8 to 16
Chapter 8: The Fallout
Greyson is calm, because he thinks he is about to die and dying would be a release. Maximus has Shadera arrested and Greyson taken to hospital, where he drifts and remembers being seven at his first execution, being told never to show mercy and never to look away.
The doctor working on him quietly thanks him. Upstairs, Clay Daunt demands both deaths under the unmasking law, and Elara produces the loophole: if the two of them marry, neither has to die. Lira argues it is good propaganda. Maximus tells Elara what happens if it fails.
Chapter 9: Kill Me Instead
Shadera sits in a cell refusing to sleep. The other prisoners are tattooed with their crimes. They are delighted when they hear she went after Greyson. She tells them it was a contract and not a statement, and knows that is a lie.
When guards drag her out the cell erupts, and the prisoners start singing a banned anthem, and the guards start shooting, and the prisoners keep singing. It moves her in a way nothing has. She grabs a gun and fights and loses, begging them to shoot her instead of the others. They ignore her.
Chapter 10: You Do Not Have A Choice
Greyson wakes alone and thinks about Shadera's appetite for violence, and decides hers is one execution he could live with. A nurse offers to overstate his injuries so he gets more time, and he refuses to let her take the risk. Mikel comes to collect him, shoves the nurse and ends up tearing Greyson's stitches, and Greyson staples himself shut rather than delay.
Downstairs Maximus keeps Shadera standing and bleeding, takes off his own mask to prove he can, and tells them they are getting married. Both refuse. He explains what happens to the Daggermouths, to Jameson, to Lira and Callum, if they keep refusing. They have six days.
Chapter 11: Something Is Wrong
Days go by with no word and Jameson starts to panic, working himself to death at a Boundary clinic where children die of things that are trivial to treat if you have supplies. He notices the drones are tracking him specifically, hides in the ruins, shoots them down. Inside he finds the Serel insignia.
He swallows his hatred and goes to the Wolf's Head. Jaeger tells him Shadera failed, was taken, and that the Heart wants something worse than her death. Jaeger intends to make her a symbol and to kill her if she turns. Jameson wants to go get her. He gets three days.
Chapter 12: My Sweet, Spineless Heir
Back at the apartment under a security sweep, Greyson worries about his hidden medical supplies and finds his father's listening devices, which he leaves exactly where they are. Shadera drinks his liquor and needles him about how obedient he is.
She tells him she has no intention of staying married and still fully intends to kill him. She says he thinks killing for the law makes him better. He says at least he does not do it for money. They brawl. She tells him he finds violence arousing. He wonders if his father put them in a room together hoping they would destroy each other.
Chapter 13: Daggermouths Don't Cry
Shadera cannot stand the luxury of the place while she knows what a Boundary kitchen looks like. She cries in the shower where nobody can hear it, blaming herself for the prisoners who died singing. In the morning she watches from the window as Greyson executes a teenage boy on the platform far below, and she beats her locked door apart.
She searches his room for a weakness and finds nothing personal except one photograph of him and Brooker, unmasked, which she steals. He catches her. They argue about the boy, who stole medical supplies. He says he remembers every person he has killed. She says that makes it worse. He agrees, which stops her cold.
Chapter 14: You Know The Rules
Callum is torturing a man named Davish for hurting one of the women under his protection, and Davish trades a secret for his life. Serel Industries has been rerouting medical supplies meant for the outer rings into private Heart clinics, and Maximus has been starving the rings deliberately.
Callum takes a finger instead of his life. Later he meets Lira, who reads him better than anyone, and remembers the night years ago when she took off her mask and kissed him and he pushed her away. Greyson arrives, and Callum floats a plan. They want to get Shadera to give up what she knows about Brooker and then expose her.
Chapter 15: I Could Show You
Shadera sets the kitchen on fire trying to cook drunk. Greyson puts it out and asks why she did not just order food, and she tells him the Heart's servants are not servants. He cooks instead, and she finds watching him do something ordinary strangely intimate, and admits she never learned because there is no fresh food where she is from.
Callum sweeps the apartment clean of devices and is impressed by how much she knows about them. She and Greyson strike a deal. They will work together to protect the people Maximus is holding over them, and keep trying to kill each other if the chance comes. That night each of them is thinking about the other, and hating themselves for it.
Chapter 16: With What Army?
Jameson reaches a rebel camp that is nearly out of everything. The leaders know him as Ghost. Sergeant Samuels reports that the prison anthem is being sung in the Boundary streets now, and that people know a Daggermouth woman went for Greyson but nobody knows her name.
Lieutenant Rook says some of them want to attack the Heart outright. Jameson intends to contact his smuggling source, not knowing his source is Greyson. He tells them about the drones and what he thinks they are mapping for. Then he tells them he is going after Shadera.
What this stretch is doing: The marriage is not romance machinery, it is a control device, and Maximus says so out loud: even the worst animal can be tamed. The irony is that Callum already told us love takes down empires. Meanwhile the prison massacre shifts Shadera's whole argument, from avenging her parents to something larger she has not named yet.

Chapters 17 to 23
Chapter 17: You Don't Get To Say That
Lira trains in an abandoned Veyra facility because women are not permitted to train at all. Callum finds her there and flirts through a sparring match. He admits to missing her, which makes her angry, because he is the one who ended it. Across the city Greyson is signing execution orders for petty crimes when Shadera turns up and they fall into an argument that has started to sound like a habit.
Lira arrives, asks bluntly whether they are sleeping together, and hands Shadera a mask shaped like a skull. Both of them like what it implies. Lira explains that her public relations job is survival, the same as anything Shadera does, and that they have the same enemy.
Chapter 18: Thank You
The mask is the first present Shadera has ever been given, and wearing it makes her feel like a traitor. She walks the Heart memorising landmarks for Jameson. Callum has hacked the Veyra base to let her inside, and what she finds is food. Warehouses full of it while the rings starve on a schedule.
Greyson explains the trade agreements in careful language that tells her exactly what he thinks of them too. She starts to understand that he is caged too, which is inconvenient, because it makes killing him harder. It also frightens her. If he cannot change it with everything he has access to what chance does she have?
Chapter 19: I Didn't Know
Dinner with Maximus. Shadera wears something that reads as elegant and armed at once and shows every scar, and Greyson notices he finds her beautiful. Maximus lets slip that he knows Jameson's code name is Ghost, which is also the name of Greyson's rebel contact. He describes engineering the starvation of the outer rings as making order out of chaos.
When Greyson defends Shadera and Lira defends Greyson, Maximus chokes his daughter, hits his wife, and shoots his son, and only gets compliance when he threatens Elara. Greyson leaves with Lira and trusts Shadera to guard her, which surprises him. At home he destroys the apartment and is ashamed she saw it. She patches him up and tells him she never thought about what it was like to be raised by that man.
Chapter 20: I Promise
Callum sees Lira's injuries and is undone by them, and by the fact that he is the reason they are not together. He calls an encrypted number to arrange a meeting with Jameson. He decides Maximus is unravelling fast enough that whatever is coming has to come soon, and starts planning a way inside Serel Industries.
Then he makes Lira tea, and she asks him into the bathroom while she is in the bath, and when she starts to cry he climbs in fully dressed to hold her. She lets him take her mask off. He promises her that Maximus will pay.
Chapter 21: I Have A Plan
Lira wakes up bruised and decides she is finished wanting revenge and has moved on to wanting change. She leaves her mask off inside Callum's house because he lets her. She looks down over a city whose surface is spotless and decides she will stop doing what her father tells her and start using the only real weapon she has, which is that she controls the story.
She makes a call to someone she does not name. It is Kestrel Farrow, who leads a rebel cell in the Cardinal. Meanwhile Maximus has kept Elara overnight in a metal mask designed to hurt. It presses on the damage and tells her she made him do it. He finally lets her out once she swears never to question him again.
Chapter 22: Everything's Personal
Jameson meets Kestrel in the Cardinal, where the new policy is that you get extra rations for informing on your neighbour. Farm workers who tried to take seeds were hanged and left up as a message. Weapons manufacturers are being held at their workplaces so nobody can see what they are building. Kestrel says the Heart is preparing for something.
Back at the tower, Greyson finally explains the Vow ceremony to Shadera: vows, faces revealed, and then a consummation performed in front of witnesses. She calls it what it is. He tells her he will let them kill him first. Then he asks about Brooker, and she says the kill order came from inside the Heart, because nobody in the outer rings could have afforded it.
Chapter 23: Four Hours
Jameson's team goes in wearing stolen Veyra uniforms with an extra one for Shadera, and he hates the sight of himself in it. Shadera dresses for a night out and stops over the stolen photograph, thinking Brooker looks familiar without being able to say why. Then Jameson learns that Jaeger's man inside the Heart is Captain Mikel, who walks them through the checkpoints, plays callous about the rings for the guards, and mentions in passing that someone called Python is trying to get out of the Heart.
Jaeger knows the name and does not explain it. Two hours to get her out. At Callum's club, Shadera watches a woman stop Greyson and feels something she refuses to call jealousy, and then a masked Veyra officer grabs her from behind and she hears Jameson's voice.
What this stretch is doing: This is where the masks stop being scenery. Lira's cracks when her father hits her, and she decides she is done. Shadera is handed one shaped like a skull, which breaks every rule about how women in the Heart are supposed to look, and starts wearing the regime's own instrument as a threat against it.
Chapters 24 to 31
Chapter 24: Jameson Fucking Vine
Shadera is furious he came and glad in a way she cannot help. Greyson turns up before she can change, and the two men are immediately territorial about her, which irritates her enormously. Greyson realises Jameson has no idea they have been smuggling medicine together for months. Jameson tells her the Boundary is rising in her name.
Shadera does not want to be anyone's symbol. Jameson thinks Maximus will not bomb the rings because he needs the labour. Shadera will not gamble on it, and Greyson points out that if she runs, he dies, and the medicine stops. She stays. When Jameson goes to kiss her, she stops him, and he tells her exactly what that means before he leaves.
Chapter 25: Do Your Fucking Worst
They ride home in silence. Greyson cannot get past the fact that she nearly left, and demands she talk to him with the masks off. She points out that a shared enemy is not the same as an alliance. Then somebody starts shooting through the windows, and they fight back together and refuse to surrender. Mid-fight she considers shooting him, and he tells her he finds her violence appealing.
Then they are kissing, and it is going somewhere, until he finds the photograph of him and Brooker in her pocket and walks out. Across the city Jaeger admits to Jameson that he knew about the Vow, and Jameson makes the Daggermouths and the rebels start sharing what they know.
Chapter 26: Eleven
Shadera wakes up mortified and refuses to discuss it. Callum arrives to clear the bodies and to enjoy himself thoroughly at their expense. He has the sniper. They put him in the weapons room and Marcus Webb tells them Mikel sent him on Maximus's orders to find evidence of disloyalty, and that the team was only supposed to plant surveillance and panicked.
When he stops talking, Greyson and Callum break his bones until he starts again, and what comes out is this: the missing workers are dead because they were the test subjects, and Maximus has a gas weapon that kills people without damaging buildings. He calls it the Culling. Lira walks in on all of it, recognises the name Marcus Webb, shoots him, and then tells them why.
Chapter 27: It Did Not Make Me Weak
Maximus asks about his missing soldiers. Greyson takes the blame and keeps Shadera out of it, claiming he thought rebels were trying to wreck the wedding. Maximus does not believe a word and confines them both until the ceremony, and when Greyson pushes back, threatens to kill them both and marry Lira off to breed a replacement heir. Shadera promises to destroy him. They get separate cells for that.
Meanwhile Callum finally asks Lira why she never told him, and she says because he would have died trying to fix it, and refuses his guilt. She does not want protection. She wants him to trust her. They say it out loud, both of them. Then the message comes that Greyson and Shadera have been arrested.
Chapter 28: Welcome To The Revolution
A Veyra patrol rolls through the Boundary announcing a curfew punishable by death, and instead of scattering, people come out with whatever they have and take the vehicles apart. The soldiers are better armed but there are simply more Boundary residents than there are soldiers. Jameson fights and does not hold back.
When it is over the survivors kneel for their dead and sing the banned anthem, and Jameson tells them to keep fighting but to do it with a plan. At the Wolf's Head, the Daggermouths commit to the war. Mikel and Kestrel walk in. Callum and Lira walk in unmasked. Mikel explains his cover, and then explains that he is Greyson's father. Then Lira hears Brooker's voice behind her.
Chapter 29: At What Cost?
Greyson is tied to a chair in a glass cell listening to Shadera being beaten, begging them to hurt him instead, and being ignored while his father watches him listen. Shadera holds on and finds this worse than any beating she has taken, because it is not for information, it is for entertainment, and she finally understands what Lira and Greyson grew up inside.
Then Maximus lays it out. He knows about the medicine. Brooker was organising an uprising and had fallen in love with someone in the Cardinal. Maximus paid the Daggermouths to kill his own son, and Shadera is the one who took the contract. He also bought the contract on Greyson, to justify the Culling. The Vow happens, or thousands die and then they die.
Chapter 30: Those Two Things
Brooker is alive and holding Kestrel's hand. Lira wants an explanation and gets one she does not like. He had to be dead to be useful. She asks about Mikel, and learns that Mikel and Elara loved each other from childhood before she was married off. Jaeger explains that he was hired to kill a man called Levi Pierce, sent Shadera to do it, and that Kestrel got to him in time. They tattooed a corpse to sell the death. The plan was to do the same for Greyson, faking his death with blanks soaked in something to drop his heart rate, once Maximus bought the contract. It failed because Shadera brought her own gun.
Chapter 31: Past Tense
Hours in a cell with no food and no water. Shadera turns the Levi Pierce contract over and over and starts to wonder how many of her kills were her own choices and how many were Maximus moving her around a board. She tells Greyson through tears that she did not know who Brooker was. She is angry anyway, mostly at herself, and no longer sure she has spent her life on the right side of anything.
Greyson tells her he had been falling for her and that now he cannot look at her without seeing his brother's killer. It lands exactly as hard as he meant it to, and then he wishes he could take it back.
What this stretch is doing: Everyone in this book is keeping a secret for a good reason, and every one of those secrets costs them. Lira's disclosure about Marcus Webb is the hardest part, and note that both men in the room immediately make it about their own failure to protect her, which she refuses. Then Maximus reveals he has been buying Daggermouth contracts all along, and Shadera loses the ability to trust her own history.
Chapters 32 to 40
Chapter 32: 3 AM
Callum waits for confirmation and thinks about Lira, who he has not seen in days. Jameson calls: the Boundary is sheltered. Callum breaks into the Heart's security system and accepts that by tonight they win or they are dead.
Chapter 33: 5 AM
Lira has learned Callum knew Brooker was alive, and she feels the betrayal from both of them, and understands it anyway, because the rebellion had to come first. She goes back through the evidence of her father's corruption she has been collecting quietly for years. She is ready for it to be over.
Chapter 34: 7 AM
Jameson gets Cardinal residents into shelters. He does not let himself think about what the Vow ceremony involves. The rebels start moving toward the Heart. He promises himself Shadera comes out of this alive.
Chapter 35: 9 AM
Maximus collects them personally and reminds Greyson what refusing costs. Greyson sees Shadera properly for the first time in days and she can barely stand. Back in the apartment she cannot get herself clean, and cannot meet his eyes.
When he comes to help she apologises for Brooker, sobbing, and he helps her without saying he forgives her, because he has not. Privately he hates what he said to her, and looks at the older scars underneath the new damage, and quietly decides to kill everyone who put them there.
Chapter 36: 11 AM
Callum arms himself and watches the ceremony site, where Daggermouths are already in place in stolen uniforms. He checks in with Mikel and Jaeger. Jameson is set. Lira has the media drones ready. He and Lira tell each other they love each other. Then Callum notes that nothing has gone wrong yet, which worries him.
Chapter 37: 11:45 AM
Shadera puts on a revealing white dress that Lira chose specifically so the whole city can see what Maximus did to her. There is a note telling her Mikel can be trusted. Greyson gets one too. He realises, with the ceremony minutes away, that he actually wants to marry her. He opens a hidden weapons cache and they joke about which of them gets to kill his father. Mikel tells them to take everything they can carry.
Chapter 38: The Vow
Lira tells Callum over comms what the Vow really involves: not only a public consummation but Maximus and several loyal men, and she apologises for not telling him she intended to stop it, and hangs up while he is still begging her to explain. Callum cannot get into the security system, and Kestrel cannot cut the power, and they work out that Lira is the one locking them out.
Greyson and Shadera are pronounced married. The veil lifts before their masks go back on, so the plaza sees both faces. And then Lira takes her own mask off, and hundreds of women take theirs off after her, and most of them are scarred, and Lira tells the city what that means.
Chapter 39: This Is What Hope Does
Callum fights his way across the Heart trying to reach her. Shadera puts a gun to Maximus's head as he moves toward Lira. Mikel kills a soldier aiming at Greyson and turns his weapon on Maximus. Maximus announces that he knew about all of it except the women, and that the rebels are already taken.
Lira tells Greyson his brother is alive. Then Maximus says Brooker is his, and Brooker walks out holding a gun to Callum's head, and confirms it: he set the whole thing up to bring Shadera into the Heart, because she was the thread that would unravel Jaeger and Jameson both. He tells Greyson who his father really is. Then the shooting starts and Brooker kills Callum.
Chapter 40: Just Not For You
Mikel steps in front of the bullet meant for Greyson. Elara starts screaming, thinking about everyone she has failed. Then she picks up Mikel's gun, tells the plaza that she is Python, and shoots her husband dead.
What this stretch is doing: The last stretch runs on a clock, hour by hour, from five points of view that each know a different piece. Then the climax deliberately skips the thing the whole book has been building toward. The Vow itself happens almost off the page, because the actual event is Lira taking off her mask and several hundred women doing it after her. The men's coordinated rebellion is compromised from the inside. The two women who told nobody anything are the ones who get through, and Elara, who has been in the background of every scene wearing a mask indoors, turns out to be Python.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many chapters are in Daggermouth? Forty, and every one has a title. The last nine run as an hour-by-hour countdown to the Vow ceremony.
Who is Python in Daggermouth? Elara Serel. Greyson's mother, the woman who wears her mask at her own dinner table and takes every beating without a word, has been running a resistance network for decades. She reveals it in the final chapter, picks up Mikel's gun, and shoots Maximus dead. The sequel is named after her.
Is Brooker really dead in Daggermouth? No. He faked his death with Jaeger and Kestrel's help, using a tattooed corpse. Then in the final chapters he turns out to have been working with Maximus the whole time, and he kills Callum.
Who is Greyson's real father? Captain Mikel. He and Elara loved each other from childhood before she was married to Maximus. Mikel reveals it at the Wolf's Head, and dies in chapter 40 taking a bullet meant for Greyson.
Does Shadera actually kill Brooker? She took the contract on a man called Levi Pierce and nearly killed him, not knowing who he was. Kestrel got to him in time. Maximus bought that contract himself, which is what makes Shadera doubt every kill she has ever made.
What is the Culling in Daggermouth? Maximus's plan to gas the outer rings, killing the population without damaging the infrastructure, to clear space for elites from other city-states. The missing weapons workers were the test subjects.
Does Daggermouth end on a cliffhanger? Yes. Maximus is dead and almost nothing else is resolved. Greyson has not forgiven Shadera, they have never said how they feel, Brooker's betrayal is unanswered, Callum is dead, and nobody knows what Elara does with the power she just took. Python picks it up on March 23, 2027.
Do Greyson and Shadera get together in Daggermouth? They marry, under duress, and they kiss once. That is as far as it goes. Greyson admits to himself he wants the marriage roughly ten minutes before everything falls apart, and neither of them says any of it out loud.
