Burn of the Everflame is here and it is the finale. If the details of Spark, Glow and Heat are a bit fuzzy here is everything you need to remember before you open book four.
Spoiler warning: this post contains full spoilers for Spark, Glow, and Heat of the Everflame. It contains no spoilers for Burn. Read freely if you are caught up through book three.
Burn of the Everflame is the fourth and final book in Penn Cole's The Kindred's Curse Saga. Diem Bellator ended Heat with a godstone sword through her heart, four Crowns to her name, and a bonded bargain hanging over her that requires her to kill her own father.
It's a lot to keep straight.

The World: Emarion, the Nine Realms, and the Descended
The continent is Emarion, divided by an ancient spell called the Forging into nine realms: Lumnos, Fortos, Faunos, Arboros, Ignios, Umbros, Meros, Sophos and Montios. Each has one ruling Crown.
The Descended are the children of the Kindred, the gods who made the realms. They inherited magic, skin like steel and rapid healing, but not immortality. Lifespans run from a few hundred years to around a thousand, and then they age and die like anyone else. Mortals got none of the magic and almost none of the rights.
Two details about Descended magic matter enormously once you hit book three. First, most Descended only ever manifest one of their realm's two magical possibilities, which is part of why Luther, who wields both light and shadow, is the most powerful Lumnos Descended of his generation.
Second, the Forging binds magic to geography. A Descended who crosses out of their own realm's borders is effectively nullified. Hold that rule next to the fact that Diem never completed her Forging ceremony, and you start to understand why magic behaves so unreliably for everyone in Heat.
Descended eyes are colored by their realm while every mortal has brown eyes. Diem has neither, which is one of the earliest signs that something about her is unexpected.
Descended skin is impenetrable by most weapons. The exceptions are godstone and Fortosian steel. This is a large part of why Fortos holds the military power in Emarion.
Diem Bellator is from Lumnos, the Realm of Light and Shadow, where the noble Descended families are known as the Twenty Houses.

Auralie disappears
Diem Bellator is a young mortal healer whose mother, Auralie, vanishes after being seen in Paradise Row talking to a Descended man. Auralie had been serving as a healer to King Ulther under a bargain with the Crown: her service in exchange for her son Teller's education. Diem inherits the job, the bargain, and the questions.
Diem meets Prince Luther
Working inside the palace puts Diem in the path of Prince Luther Corbois, King Ulther's nephew. He is cold, watchful and infuriating, and the pull between them makes no sense to either of them. Every argument they have is really an argument about whether the world they live in is just.
The Guardians of the Everflame
Henri Albanon has been Diem's best friend since childhood and becomes her lover in this book. He hates the Descended for a specific reason: his mother died of an illness that could have been treated with a herb native to Montios, and the Crown denied his family permission to go and get it. Henri brings Diem to the Guardians of the Everflame, the underground mortal resistance, and asks her to use her position in the palace to feed them intelligence. By the end of the book he has proposed to her. What pushes Diem toward the Guardians herself is Paradise Row, where she watches a Descended man kill his own half mortal child and the child's mother. Diem is hurt in the incident and heals far faster than any mortal should.
The king's prophecy and the Crown
Book one ends with two hits in a row. At the bedside of the dying King Ulther, another voice speaks through him, naming Diem the Devourer of Crowns and the Daughter of the Forgotten.
Then, in front of Teller, the Crown of Lumnos settles onto Diem's head instead of Luther's.
The mortal girl who spent an entire book raging at the Descended is one of them, and she is now their queen.
Glow of the Everflame Recap: The Challenging, the Heartstone, and What Luther Really Did
A queen nobody wants
Diem does not want the Crown and Lumnos does not want her wearing it. She had taken flameroot daily for a decade to manage what she was told were delusions. She knew she was taking it. What she did not know was that her mother was using it to suppress her magic.
Luther turns up accusing her of killing his uncle, and then helps her anyway. Eleanor Corbois, written off by her family as frivolous, becomes Diem's advisor and closest friend. Taran, Luther's warrior cousin, treats her as an equal from the start. Aemonn Corbois is charming and is manipulating her, including by pinning a half mortal child's death on Luther when Aemonn was responsible.
Andrei Bellator is killed
Andrei Bellator, the man who raised Diem, is murdered at their cottage, with anti mortal slurs left behind at the scene. He is her adoptive father, which matters later.
The Ascension Ball and the Challenging
Diem and Henri are engaged now, and it is already going wrong. Henri wants to use his position as the queen's betrothed to break the Descended from the inside, and he turns up at the Ascension Ball with Guardians intending to kill them. Diem stops the attack, partly because it would certainly have failed and gotten him killed. He forgives her but keeps using her anyway.
The Challenging is a thirty day window in which any Descended can fight the new queen to the death for her Crown. All Twenty Houses raise a Challenge against Diem. Then Luther steps forward and Challenges her too, on behalf of House Corbois.
Diem refuses to fight him and picks Rhon Ghislaine instead, the Descended who killed the child in Paradise Row, because she wants justice more than she wants a safe opponent. She nearly loses. Her magic will not come when she begs it and only answers when she stops treating it as something separate from herself.
She beats Rhon and chooses mercy. He lunges at her with a hidden blade anyway, and she incinerates him.
Luther's Challenge turns out to have been a plan to die. He intended to let Diem defeat and kill him, because a public victory over a prominent prince would force the hostile Houses to accept that she had the strength to rule. He is also revealed to also be half mortal, his birth mother a woman named Florille.
The heartstone cracks
At the Rite of Coronation on the sacred island of Coeurîle, Diem's blood causes the heartstone to crack, and lightning finishes the job. The Sophos Crown brands her an imposter. The Temple erupts, Auralie screams at her to run, and book two ends mid catastrophe.

Book three is a chase, and it is where the series stops being about one realm.
Captured by the Guardians
Diem wakes a prisoner of a Guardian cell led by Vance and Cordellia, force fed flameroot to keep her magic down. Then comes the gut punch. Her mother Auralie commands the entire Guardian network, from a Fortos prison cell, while awaiting execution.
Vance blames Diem for protecting Descended over mortals and cuts her open to harvest her blood, because Descended blood is what opens the bloodlocks on the Lumnos palace. He intends to walk in and kill everyone inside.
Cordellia helps her escape, judging that Vance's appetite for violence will destroy the movement. Brecke helps too. Diem fights her way out alongside Luther, Taran and Alixe Corbois, whom she later names High General.
Crossing Ignios, and blood that beats godstone
The four of them stumble across the border into the Ignios desert with the Ignios King hunting them on gryvern back. Taran takes a godstone tipped spear to the ribs and starts dying of the poison. Diem's blood drips into his poultice by accident and the black veins recede. She does not connect the two at the time, which matters enormously later.
On the Ignios coast, facing the King, Diem discovers she can absorb fire magic directly. The flames nearly take her, and Luther follows her into scalding water and holds her until she has control of them.
Umbros, Yrselle, and Zalaric
In Umbros they meet Queen Yrselle, who reads people through her mind reading Centenaries and offers to spare Auralie's execution if Diem stays three days. They also meet Zalaric Hanoverre, known as the Jaguar, Luther's contact in Umbros and one of the half mortal children Luther smuggled to safety years earlier. He betrays them and then helps them escape, which is roughly how he does everything, and he and Taran spend the whole book pretending not to notice each other.
Umbros is also where Luther tells Diem that she can access all of the Kindred gifts, not just Lumnos.
Luther has been hiding a godstone wound of his own, taken during the rescue, and has been quietly dying of it for days. Back in Lumnos, nothing works, and everyone credits the Arboros vial on Diem's desk when he finally recovers. It was not the vial. It was her blood, the same thing that pulled Taran back in the desert, and Diem does not work it out until much later.
When Yrselle tries to stop them leaving, Diem defies her and they escape by air on Sorae. Yrselle pursues, and Diem's lavender flame engulfs her and her gryvern. Yrselle survives it.
How Diem ends up with four Crowns
This is the part that can get confusing.
Diem starts with Lumnos.
She takes Fortos by launching a mission to rescue her mother. In the confrontation that follows she unleashes the full range of her growing power, kills the Fortos Crown, and claims the Crown while freeing Auralie.
Montios comes to her without a fight. The Montios Crown died in the attack on the island, and when Diem reaches the realm she learns the Crown has already passed to her.
And Umbros comes last. Yrselle survives the flight from her realm and turns up at the Temple, and as she moves to cast her vote in Diem's favor the Ignios King attacks her. She dies, but not before raking him with her godstone tipped nails, which is a detail worth filing away for later. Her Crown passes to Diem.
Four Crowns, held by one woman who was raised mortal.
Two important things happen along the way. Fighting her way out of Fortos, Diem uses Umbros compulsion to order the General to take his own life, which is the furthest she has gone and the clearest look yet at what these Crowns are turning her into. And back in Lumnos, Alixe quietly collects the black stones left behind by the explosion at the Bellator house after Andrei's death, and they turn out to be godstone. Diem does not just survive godstone. She makes it.
Coeurîle, Doriel, and the bargain
Before any of that, Ophiucae finds her. Diem spies on him using Forging magic, he catches her doing it, and he marks her with a ten pointed star. When she and Luther and Auralie go after him he greets Auralie like an old acquaintance and calls Diem daughter.
He is her biological father, a Descended of the line of the suppressed tenth Kindred, Omnos. Auralie's account is that he turned paranoid and possessive, and that he tried to stab Diem as an infant, though the detail suggests he may have been after her blood to destroy the heartstone and break his own bonds rather than to kill her. Auralie is not a reliable narrator, and we know it.
Doriel, the Crown of Sophos, is the one who traps her. Doriel takes a bonded bargain: they will get Diem and Auralie pardoned, and in exchange Diem will kill the man behind the attacks. If Diem cannot deliver, she loses her magic, which is precisely why Doriel then tries to have her imprisoned.
When that fails and Diem refuses to complete the ceremony, Doriel uses Teller as leverage to force her into a revised Forging spell. It binds Diem to Coeurîle, and it kills anyone still on the island after sunset.
The prophecy she is carrying into book four
The late Montios Crown left a letter for whoever inherited, and Diem is the one who reads it. The part that matters:
Eleven must fall for one to rise. Share the gift to pay the cost, a dying star will rekindle the spark. What is forgotten is not lost. Remember my sister's words, beware my brother's wrath. Good luck, daughter of the forgotten.
Note that last line. Ulther used the same phrase over his deathbed three books ago.
Heat of the Everflame Ending Explained
Here is exactly how book three leaves everyone.
Luther, Teller and a loyal guard named Perth run for Sorae as the revised spell takes hold. Sorae arrives, but she cannot carry all of them. Teller tries to hold on to both Perth and Luther, and Perth lets go and accepts his death as the spell takes hold.
Teller survives. Perth does not.
Diem stays behind. Then the Ignios King drives a godstone sword through her heart from behind. She goes down feeling an unexpected warmth as the world fades, and the book stops there. Her fate is left suspended. She is not confirmed dead.
So Burn opens with a woman holding four Crowns dying alone on a sealed island, a bonded bargain demanding she kill her father, a cracked heartstone under the whole continent, and Ophiucae marching an army north.
Where Every Character Stands Before Burn of the Everflame
Diem Bellator
Raised mortal, revealed Descended, and now holding Four Crowns. Lumnos, Fortos, Montios and Umbros. Her blood cracks the heartstone and counteracts godstone poisoning. The stones her magic left behind at her family home are godstone, so she appears to be able to create the one substance that can kill her own kind. Bound by a bonded bargain to kill the man who led the attack on Sophos, who also happens to be her father. Last seen with a godstone sword through her heart.
Luther Corbois
Half mortal, nephew of the late King Ulther, survivor of godstone poisoning, and the person who has consistently put himself between Diem and the worst of it. Heat also reveals what he was really doing with the bounties on half mortal children. He placed them himself, priced so the children would be brought in alive, because that was the only way he could get to them first. Off the island. Burn's synopsis says that a heart without its mate will burn the world down to fulfill its fate, and if you have read Heat you know which heart and which mate.
Teller Bellator
Diem's brother, educated among the Descended because of Auralie's bargain, and the leverage Doriel used to trap Diem. Alive and off the island.
Auralie Bellator
Diem's mother, commander of the Guardian network, the person who kept Diem on flameroot for a decade, and the woman whose account of Ophiucae is the only one Diem has. Freed from Fortos by Diem and reunited with her children, but wary of the political chaos building around her daughter and openly distrustful of Luther, whose closeness to Diem she thinks will complicate the war between the realms.
Ophiucae
Diem's biological father, descended from the suppressed tenth Kindred Omnos. He tells her he has her eyes, which lands differently once you know Descended eye color runs by realm and Diem's grey belongs to none of them. Per Atria's synopsis he is marching an army of mortals north to eradicate the Descended from the continent.
Taran
Luther's cousin and Diem's friend. Took a godstone spear to the ribs and nearly died of the poison in the Ignios desert. Diem's blood is what pulled him back, though she does not realise it until much later and does not tell a soul when she does.
Alixe Corbois
A Corbois, a warrior, and the person Diem made High General over Luther, specifically because Alixe will follow an order even when it puts Diem in danger and Luther will not.
Henri Albanon
Diem's oldest friend, her first love, and technically still her betrothed for most of Heat. She finally goes to Mortal City to end it and to warn him that her mother's escape puts the Guardians in danger, and finds him with Lana, a healer and Guardian who admits the affair and makes it clear she is keeping him. In the same conversation it comes out that Henri knew Auralie was on the island before the attack. He is unrepentant about the coronation bombing too. He and Luther loathe each other. One of the real open wounds going into book four.
Cordellia and Vance
Co-leaders of the Guardian cell that held Diem. Cordellia helped her escape. Vance harvested her blood to break into the Lumnos palace and remains the most dangerous mortal in the story.
Zalaric Hanoverre
The Jaguar. Half mortal, one of the children Luther smuggled out years ago, and the most powerful person in Umbros who is not wearing a Crown. He sold them out and then helped them anyway, his own father has put a price on his head, and whatever is building between him and Taran has not been said out loud by either of them. Loyalties genuinely open.
Doriel
The Crown of Sophos, they and them, and the architect of the trap that sealed Coeurîle and left Diem on it.
The Ignios King
Murdered Yrselle at the Temple and put a godstone sword through Diem. The most immediate threat in book four, and the one carrying an injury nobody has accounted for, because Yrselle raked him with godstone tipped nails on her way down.
Remis Corbois
Luther's father and the former Regent of Lumnos. He spends Heat undermining Diem, orchestrates an attack on Sorae, openly claims he is the rightful Crown, and sends word to the Fortos Crown that Diem is coming to assassinate him. Diem left him in his position anyway.
Eleanor and Aemonn Corbois
Eleanor is Diem's advisor and genuinely loyal. Aemonn is charming and has been manipulating her since book two.
Sorae
Diem's gryvern, bound to the Lumnos Crown. Diem sent her away to Lumnos under orders to obey Remis, and she came back anyway, and she is the reason Teller and Luther got off that island alive.
The Everflame Terms You Need to Remember
The Kindred: the gods who made the realms. The Descended are their children's line. There were nine, plus a suppressed tenth, Omnos.
The Forging: the ancient spell that split Emarion into nine realms and bound them together. It is maintained by Crowns shedding blood on the heartstone during ritual.
The heartstone: the massive black crystal at the center of the Kindred's Temple on Coeurîle, and the source of the Forging magic. Diem's blood cracked it.
Godstone: the rare substance that wounds, poisons and kills the Descended, and burns mortal skin. Diem's blood counteracts the poison. The black stones her magic left at the Bellator house are godstone too, which raises a question the series has not answered.
Fortosian steel: the only ordinary metal that can slice Descended skin. Standard mortal blades do nothing. It is the reason Fortos supplies the army for all nine realms.
The Everflame: the Tree of Life and Death that once stood on Coeurîle. The Kindred cut it down and built the Kindred's Temple out of godstone in its place. Every oath, rebellion and prophecy in this series traces back to that tree, which is why the Guardians named themselves for it.
The Blood War: the failed Guardian uprising in Emarion's history. After it was crushed, references to the Everflame were outlawed across all nine realms, which is why the Guardians operate as an underground network rather than an army.
Flameroot: a powder that suppresses Descended magic.
Gryverns: creatures with the head of a sea dragon, the wings and talons of an eagle and the body of a lion, bound to serve as guardians to the Crowns. Every realm has one. Sorae belongs to Lumnos, Rosha to Faunos, Onaar to Arboros, Tybold to Ignios, Cyranei to Umbros, Arilloc to Meros, Vexes to Sophos, and the Fortos and Montios gryverns, Baldrum and Rymari, are both dead.
Bloodlocks: the magical locks on the Lumnos palace that only Descended blood can open.
The Twenty Houses: the noble Descended families of Lumnos, who can contest a monarch through the Challenging.
The Challenging: a thirty day window in which any Descended may fight the new monarch to the death.
Mates: a sacred and irreversible bond formed only through true love, distinct from marriage, which can be arranged or broken. A Descended who completes the ritual on love that is not returned becomes a stranded mate, bound for life to someone who does not feel it back. Hold that next to Atria's line about a heart without its mate and you can see the shape of the finale.

Do You Need to Reread Before Burn?
Honestly, no, not if you have this page. The three books run long and a full reread is a serious time commitment.
If you want a middle path, reread Heat. Everything from Umbros through the Temple on Coeurîle is what Burn picks straight up from, and it is the part most likely to have gone fuzzy.
The audiobooks for books one to three are a strong option if you would rather relisten than reread. I keep a running list of books that are better on audio and romantasy with this much banter makes for a great audiobook.
