The Fastest Possible Refresher
Here is the whole series in one breath. Crowns of Nyaxia is set in a vampire world ruled by the goddess Nyaxia, who broke from the older gods and now sits at odds with them. The main series runs as three duets.
The Nightborn Duet (Books 1 and 2) is Oraya and Raihn. The Shadowborn Duet (Books 3 and 4) is Mische and Asar. The Bloodborn Duet (Books 5 and 6) starts with The Lion and the Deathless Dark. Two side stories, Six Scorched Roses and Slaying the Vampire Conqueror, fill in the corners and quietly set up the endgame.
So in short we have god blood, god-killing, and a slow-building war against Nyaxia herself. Keep that in mind, because Book 5 walks straight into it.
Book 1 Recap: The Serpent and the Wings of Night
We meet Oraya, the only human in a kingdom of vampires, raised as the fiercely protected adopted daughter of Vincent, king of the Hiaj vampires. To win real power and a place in this world, she enters the Kejari, a brutal tournament held by Nyaxia where the prize is a single wish from the goddess.
Her problem has a name: Raihn, a charming rival competitor who turns out to be the exiled Heir of the rival Rishan line. They go from wary allies to something much harder to walk away from. Then the Kejari does what the Kejari does. In the final trial the two of them are forced to fight, and Oraya kills Raihn to survive. She wins, and she gives up her wish rather than use it, which turns out to matter enormously.
The ending stacks reveal on reveal. Raihn comes back and reclaims his Rishan Heir power, and he kills Vincent. In the middle of that devastation, the Hiaj Heir Mark passes to Oraya, revealing that she is not just Vincent's ward. She is his blood daughter, part vampire, the true Hiaj Heir. The book closes with Raihn marrying her, partly to protect her as the two vampire houses crash together with both of them at the center.

Novella: Six Scorched Roses
Quick one, because it pays off later. Lilith is a chronically ill scientist in the town of Adcova, dying alongside her neighbors from a divine plague sent by the god Vitarus. She strikes a bargain with a mysterious vampire named Vale: six vials of her blood for a cure. Along the way she learns her own father's old bargain is what brought the curse down in the first place.
She cures the plague, offers her life to Vitarus in the process, and Vale turns her into a vampire to save her. Lilith and her blood expertise carry forward into the wider Nyaxia world, so she is worth remembering.
Book 2 Recap: The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King
Book 2 picks up in the wreckage of Book 1. Oraya is reeling from Vincent's death and from learning what she really is, and she and Raihn have to figure out how to lead a fractured people while every faction circles. The bigger game comes into focus here: the god blood of Alarus, a dead god whose power everyone wants, and Nyaxia pulling strings behind all of it.
Oraya and Raihn end up bound by a Coriatis bond, a life-linking connection tied to the goddess Acaeja, which raises the stakes on every fight because losing one can mean losing both. The main antagonist, Vincent's cousin Simon, makes his play for power and loses, and Nyaxia herself finishes him off in a chilling reminder of who actually runs this world.
By the end, Oraya has stopped running from being Vincent's heir and steps into it. The Hiaj and Rishan lines unite under her and Raihn, and the two of them finally get their hard-won happy ending. One loose thread walks off on her own: Mische, the relentlessly sunny vampire from Oraya's circle, leaves to chase answers about her own past. That is your on-ramp to Book 3.
Novella: Slaying the Vampire Conqueror
This standalone runs roughly alongside Book 2, and it matters more for Book 5 than its "optional" label suggests. It follows Sylina, a blind assassin and seer of the Arachessen who serves the goddess Acaeja, and Atrius, a cursed vampire conqueror tied to the House of Blood. Enemies, then not.
The reason to care right now: the House of Blood and the god-killing threads it touches feed directly into the Bloodborn Duet. If you want the fullest possible context for The Lion and the Deathless Dark, this is the one to have read.
Book 3 Recap: The Songbird and the Heart of Stone
New duet, new couple. Mische, once a devoted acolyte of the sun god Atroxus and now a vampire, sets out on a journey into the underworld with Asar, a brooding Shadowborn prince and necromancer who guards a place called Morthryn. Their quest circles the dead god Alarus and the power everyone has been chasing since Book 2.
The book digs into Mische's buried past (including a painful history around a figure named Saescha) and pushes her to a breaking point. In the climax she kills Atroxus, the god who once claimed her, and the power of Alarus pours into Asar. Then it gut-punches you: Mische dies, and wakes in the underworld face to face with Vincent. The book ends on a cliffhanger with Asar imprisoned, which is exactly the kind of ledge Broadbent loves to leave you on.
Book 4 Recap: The Fallen and the Kiss of Dusk
Book 4 closes out Mische and Asar. To save the man she loves and set the world right, the story runs on sacrifice and divine bargains. Asar trades his own heart to Nyaxia in exchange for Alarus's heart and begins to ascend toward godhood. Mische, now stepping into real power as an heir to the dead, splits the divine heart to bring him back, and Acaeja ends up claiming both Houses in the fallout.
Mische and Asar marry in the underworld, which is as gothic and romantic as it sounds. And then the epilogue quietly lights the fuse for everything coming next. Septimus, the silver-tongued House of Blood schemer who has been lurking in the background, moves into focus, alongside a woman named Kyrene and a sword blessed by a goddess of justice, with Nyaxia squarely in the crosshairs. If you felt the series pivot in that final scene, you were right.

Where Everyone Stands Going Into Book 5
Quick state of the world before you start The Lion and the Deathless Dark:
Oraya and Raihn rule the now-united Hiaj and Rishan vampires. Their arc is complete, and they are not the leads of Book 5.
Mische and Asar came through the fire of the Shadowborn Duet changed, married, and tangled up with the House of Shadow and the underworld. Also not the leads of Book 5.
Nyaxia is still the goddess at the center of everything, still dangerous, and now openly a target. The long war against the gods she helped start is no longer subtext.
