Veronica Roth is going back to the world that made her a household name and she's doing it in an unexpected way.
Announced at BookCon in New York City on April 18, 2026, The Sixth Faction is a new Divergent novel releasing October 6, 2026. But this isn't Divergent 4. It's an alternate-universe reimagining of Beatrice Prior's story. A "what if" that asks what would have happened if, after a tragedy, Tris had made a different choice than joining Dauntless.
The book launches a new planned duology within the Divergent universe, timed to celebrate the 15-year anniversary of the original novel.
This page covers everything we know so far. We'll update it as details drop. Cover reveal, synopsis, preorder links, and any additional announcements from Roth or her publisher.

What Veronica Roth Said About The Sixth Faction
Roth revealed the book at BookCon and spoke to ELLE in an exclusive interview. She described being "obsessed" with the Divergent universe when she first drafted it as a college student. The series became a sensation in the early 2010s alongside The Hunger Games, making Roth a household name but the visibility was suffocating.
In writing The Sixth Faction, Roth found she could enjoy the universe she created again and move past the external and internal voices that had made it difficult for years. The book represents her reckoning with the series's legacy and finding her way back to the world she built.
Is The Sixth Faction a Sequel to Divergent?
No. The Sixth Faction is not a continuation of the original Divergent trilogy. It's an alternate-universe story. Same world, same Beatrice Prior, but a different choice at a pivotal moment leads to a completely different story. Think of it as a "what if" novel rather than a "what next" novel.
If you're hoping for a direct sequel that picks up after Allegiant, this isn't that. But if you've ever wondered what would have happened if Tris had chosen differently, this is Roth answering that question herself.
What Is the Sixth Faction?
The Divergent universe has five factions: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. The title "The Sixth Faction" implies the existence of something beyond those five and the synopsis gives us a major clue.
In the original Divergent, Beatrice chooses Dauntless. In The Sixth Faction, tragedy strikes at the Choosing Ceremony and Beatrice makes a different choice. That choice thrusts her into "the crosshairs of an underground rebellion" which sounds like the factionless, a resistance movement, or something entirely new that operates outside the five-faction system.
The other major detail: the love interest is "a boy with only a number for a name." That's not Four. Four was his Dauntless name, and his real name is Tobias. A boy with a NUMBER for a name suggests a completely different character, possibly someone from outside the faction system entirely.
Whether the sixth faction is literal (a new faction), political (the rebellion), or philosophical (the Divergent themselves) hasn't been confirmed. But between the underground rebellion and the numbered boy, Roth is building something that doesn't exist in the original trilogy.
Do I Need to Reread Divergent Before The Sixth Faction?
We don't know yet. Since The Sixth Faction is an alternate-universe story, it may be accessible without a full reread. Roth will likely reintroduce the world for readers who haven't picked up the original in years. That said, the emotional impact of a "what if" story depends on knowing what actually happened, so a refresher on the original trilogy (especially the Choosing Ceremony and the events of book 1) will probably make The Sixth Faction hit harder.
We'll publish a Divergent recap closer to the release date if one seems necessary.
