How It Compares to the 1995 Sense and Sensibility

The 1995 film is a tough act to follow. Ang Lee directed it, Emma Thompson wrote the screenplay and won an Oscar for it, and she starred as Elinor alongside Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman. For a lot of readers, that cast is the Dashwoods.

Early reviews for the new version are good, if not quite at that level. The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus says it "may not best previous adaptations but achieves a wistful identity of its own," and The Telegraph gave it five stars, calling it "Austen with the bonnets blown off."

What Is Sense and Sensibility About?

When Mr. Dashwood dies, his estate passes to his son from his first marriage, and his wife and three daughters are left with very little. Their half-brother John promised his father he would take care of them, but his wife Fanny talks him out of nearly all of it. So Mrs. Dashwood, Elinor, Marianne, and young Margaret move to a small cottage in Devonshire on the estate of a cousin, Sir John Middleton.

The title comes from the two older sisters. Elinor, nineteen, is all sense. She is practical, composed, and keeps her feelings to herself, even when she is quietly falling for Fanny's kind, awkward brother, Edward Ferrars. Marianne, sixteen, is all sensibility. She feels everything at a ten, and when the dashing John Willoughby carries her home after she twists her ankle in the rain, she falls for him completely and doesn't care who knows it.

What follows is a story about heartbreak, money, secrets, and what happens when you hide your feelings versus when you can't hide them at all.

Sense and Sensibility Characters

Elinor Dashwood

The eldest sister and the heart of the book. Sensible, loyal, and endlessly patient, she carries everyone else's crises while hiding her own heartbreak.

Marianne Dashwood

The romantic. Passionate, impulsive, and allergic to pretending, she believes you only truly love once.

Margaret Dashwood

The youngest sister, mostly in the background of the novel, though adaptations love to give her more to do.

Mrs. Dashwood

Their warm, romantic mother, who is a lot more like Marianne than Elinor.

Edward Ferrars

Fanny's shy, decent older brother, who has no interest in the fame and fortune his mother wants for him.

John Willoughby

Charming, handsome, and as passionate about poetry and music as Marianne is. Almost too perfect.

Colonel Brandon

Sir John's quiet, older friend, who falls for Marianne early on. She considers him far too old to love anyone.

Lucy Steele

A sweet-seeming young woman who befriends Elinor with a very specific purpose.

Mrs. Jennings

Sir John's mother-in-law, a cheerful, nosy, matchmaking widow with a good heart under the gossip.

John and Fanny Dashwood

The half-brother and sister-in-law who leave the Dashwood women with almost nothing. Their conversation about how little they can get away with giving is one of Austen's funniest scenes.

Sense and Sensibility Ending Explained (Book Spoilers)

Spoilers for the novel start here.

Willoughby suddenly leaves Devonshire without proposing. That winter, Elinor and Marianne go to London with Mrs. Jennings, where Willoughby coldly snubs Marianne at a party. He is engaged to a wealthy heiress, Miss Grey, because he has run through his money and needs hers. Marianne is shattered.

Colonel Brandon then tells Elinor the truth about Willoughby. He seduced and abandoned Brandon's young ward, Eliza Williams, leaving her pregnant, and his aunt cut him off when she found out. That is why he needed to marry for money.

Elinor has her own secret to carry. Lucy Steele has confided that she has been secretly engaged to Edward Ferrars for four years, since he was a young man studying with her uncle. Elinor keeps the secret for months, hiding how much it hurts. When the engagement comes out, Edward's mother disinherits him and gives his fortune to his younger brother, Robert. Edward honorably refuses to break his promise to Lucy, and Colonel Brandon offers him a living as a clergyman so the couple can marry.

On the way home, Marianne falls dangerously ill at the Palmers' house, Cleveland. While she is close to death, Willoughby arrives to explain himself to Elinor. He did love Marianne, he says, but he chose money. Marianne recovers, and with Elinor's help comes to see Willoughby clearly.

Then the twist. Lucy Steele marries Robert Ferrars instead, since he now has the money. Edward is free, and he comes straight to Barton Cottage to propose to Elinor. They marry and settle at Delaford. A few years later, Marianne marries Colonel Brandon, and Austen tells us she comes to love him as fully as she once loved Willoughby.

Both sisters end up meeting in the middle. Elinor learns that feelings are worth expressing, and Marianne learns that a quieter, steadier love can be the real thing.

Once I see the movie, I'll do a full movie vs. book breakdown like my East of Eden Netflix vs. book comparison.

My Thoughts

I'll be honest, I found the lengthy descriptions and arguments between the sisters a bit hard to get through. But I love the premise, that you need a bit of both sense and sensibility, which is why I'm curious to see what a two-hour movie does with it. (For the record, my favorite Austens are Mansfield Park, Emma, and Northanger Abbey.)
