The battle for Íseldur has a date. Embers of Chaos, book four in Demi Winters' Ashen series, comes out May 18, 2027, and the official description promises a dragon, a war, and the gods themselves joining the fight.

In my Ashen series guide I said this series gets better with every book, and that Dawn of the North was the strongest one yet. So to say I am excited for this one is a bit of an understatement.

Here is everything we know so far, including the release date, what it is about, and how many books are left.

What Is Embers of Chaos About?

Spoiler warning: the official description gives away some big things from the end of Dawn of the North. If you have not finished book three, skip ahead to the reading order.

The king is dead, a dragon has awakened, and war is coming to Íseldur. Silla and Saga Volsik are finally together again, and they have one goal, to take back the throne that was stolen from their family seventeen years ago.

Standing in their way are Signe and her warband of monsters, and the dragon Kraugeir, who threatens everyone they love. As the sisters head south to face it, their new bond gets tested. A prophecy puts a strain on Silla's love life, and Saga has to choose between her heart and her duty.

And the stakes are bigger than a throne. Rökkur is coming, the gods are going to war, and mortals are their weapons. The sisters have to stop a god before what the description calls "the twilight of days."

Sisters fighting side by side against a dragon, with the gods closing in? This is exactly where I hoped the series would go.

Is Embers of Chaos the Last Ashen Book?

No. Demi Winters' website lists a fifth Ashen book, with the title still to be announced. So Embers of Chaos sets up the endgame, but it is not the finale.

The Ashen Series in Order

If you are new to the series, now is a great time to start, because you have until May to catch up:

  1. The Road of Bones
  2. Kingdom of Claw
  3. Roots of Darkness (novella, book 2.5)
  4. Dawn of the North
  5. Embers of Chaos (May 18, 2027)
  6. Book five (title to be announced)

Roots of Darkness follows Hekla and the Bloodaxe Crew. It is technically optional, but I strongly recommend reading it before Dawn of the North. My spoiler-free Ashen series guide breaks down each book and who the series is perfect for.
