It's official. If you're reading A Court of Splintered Harmony, Crescent City matters. The last Crescent City book sent Bryce Quinlan into Prythian, and by the end of it, Nesta Archeron was holding a very important sword. If you skipped Crescent City or it's been a while, this is everything you need to know, without rereading three very long books.

Spoiler warning: this post has full spoilers for all three Crescent City books. It has no spoilers for A Court of Splintered Harmony.

Need the ACOTAR side too? My ACOTAR recap covers books one to five, and my A Court of Silver Flames chapter summary goes chapter by chapter.

Do You Need to Read Crescent City Before ACOTAR 6?

You can follow ACOTAR without it. But the third Crescent City book, House of Flame and Shadow, rewrites a big piece of Prythian's history. It explains where the Dread Trove came from, what the Prison really is, and how the Night Court's bloodline goes back further than anyone knew. That's what this recap is here to fill in.

The three books, in order:

  1. House of Earth and Blood (March 3, 2020)
  2. House of Sky and Breath (February 15, 2022)
  3. House of Flame and Shadow (January 30, 2024)

Crescent City in 60 Seconds

Midgard is the world. It's ruled by the Asteri, beings worshipped as gods, who have held power for about 15,000 years. Their leader is Rigelus, called the Bright Hand. Below them, Archangels govern each territory.

Crescent City, also called Lunathion, is a modern city with phones, clubs, and nightlife, plus Fae, angels, shifters, and witches. Magical beings are called vanir, and they rank above humans.

Everyone belongs to one of four Houses. Earth and Blood (shifters, humans, witches), Sky and Breath (Fae, angels, elementals), Many Waters (mer and water beings), and Flame and Shadow (vampyrs and darker creatures).

The Drop is how vanir claim their full power and immortality. You die at the bottom, and an Anchor brings you back. The power released during it is called firstlight, and it runs the whole world.

Halos are tattoos on the foreheads of the Fallen, angels who rebelled under the Archangel Shahar about 200 years ago and lost. The halo suppresses their power and brands them as Fallen. Slaves also carry a separate tattoo on the wrist.

House of Earth and Blood Recap (Book 1)

The Murder

Bryce Quinlan is 23, half-Fae and half-human, and works at an antiquities gallery owned by the sorceress Jesiba Roga. Her best friend is Danika Fendyr, a wolf shifter and Alpha of the Pack of Devils. Bryce's biological father is the Autumn King, which makes the Fae Crown Prince Ruhn Danaan her half-brother. Ruhn is Starborn and carries the Starsword.

After a night out, Bryce comes home to find Danika and the entire Pack of Devils slaughtered.

The Investigation

About two years later, new murders match the old ones. Archangel Micah, the city's governor, assigns Hunt Athalar to work the case with Bryce. Hunt is a Fallen angel with lightning powers, known as the Umbra Mortis, and Micah's enslaved assassin. Hunt owes a debt of 2,217 lives and has paid 82. Micah offers to cut what's left to just ten if they solve the case.

The trail leads to a demon called the kristallos, a drug called synth, and Luna's Horn, a Fae relic the Starborn prince Pelias once used in the First War. It was stolen from Luna's Temple, and the theft was covered up by Danika's mother, Sabine.

Bryce and Hunt fall for each other. Then Bryce learns Hunt had been secretly plotting with two other rebels, Viktoria and Justinian. Micah catches them and hands Hunt over to the Archangel Sandriel. Bryce offers Sandriel 97 million gold marks and her amulet for him, then offers herself. Ruhn stops the trade.

The Truth

While the city's leaders are at the Summit, Micah corners Bryce in the gallery. Bryce gets a message to Jesiba, who puts the gallery's cameras on the Summit screens so everyone sees what happens next.

Micah confesses. He forced Danika to steal the Horn, and when she wouldn't tell him where she'd hidden it, he injected her with synth. She killed her pack and then herself. And the Horn? Danika had it ground into ink and tattooed on Bryce's back during a drunken night out. The tattoo reads "Through love, all is possible." Danika had the same words.

Micah injects Bryce with synth to power the Horn. Bryce traps him, the fire sprite Lehabah dies helping her, and Bryce kills Micah with the Godslayer Rifle.

The Ending

The Horn opens portals to Hel across the city's seven Gates. Bryce defends the human district, Ithan Holstrom and the wolves join her, and Bryce reveals she's Starborn. At the Summit, the witch queen Hypaxia removes Hunt's halo, and Hunt kills Sandriel.

Bryce makes the Drop with Danika's spirit as her Anchor. Her light heals the city and closes the portals, and she's left with an eight-pointed star scar on her chest. Rigelus grants Hunt his freedom. The price is their silence, and Bryce must never use the Horn again.

The epilogue: Jesiba meets Aidas, a Prince of Hel, who reveals that Bryce carries the light of Theia, an ancient Starborn queen he thought was gone forever when Pelias killed her.

The Setup

The book picks up a few months later. The Autumn King has betrothed Bryce to Cormac, the Crown Prince of Avallen and Bryce's cousin, who turns out to be a rebel agent. Ruhn is secretly talking mind to mind with a rebel spy called Agent Daybright. And a human rebel named Sofie Renast, who made the Drop, was caught by the Hind after freeing her brother Emile from a prison camp. Everyone wants to find Emile.

What They Uncover

  • The Asteri aren't gods. They came from elsewhere and feed on firstlight, the power released when people make the Drop. They also feed on the secondlight of the dead, so nobody gets a true afterlife.
  • The Starborn shut the gates between worlds to stop the Asteri from invading again. Pelias wasn't a true prince. He took the throne after Theia's death and forced her daughter Helena to marry him.
  • Hel was never the enemy. Hel and the Fae had fought the Asteri together, and Aidas loved Theia.
  • Rigelus was behind Danika's murder. He secretly steered Micah into killing her because she'd learned that shifters were once Fae. Micah never knew he was doing it for the Asteri.
  • The prophecy: "When knife and sword are reunited, so shall our people be." The Starsword was made from a fallen star.

Relationships and Reveals

Bryce and Hunt become mates, and Bryce declares it publicly, which infuriates the Autumn King. Baxian turns out to have been Danika's mate. Cormac dies destroying an Asteri lab. And the Hind, Lidia Cervos, the Asteri's feared interrogator, turns out to be Agent Daybright.

The Ending and the ACOTAR Crossover

Rigelus wants Bryce and the Horn to reopen the gates between worlds. Bryce plays along, grabs the Starsword from Ruhn, and opens a portal, but she means to go to Hel and bring back its armies. Rigelus puts the halo back on Hunt. Hunt, Ruhn, and Baxian are left imprisoned.

Bryce lands on grass, in mist, and thinks she's in Hel. She isn't. Azriel finds her and brings her to the Night Court's inner circle. Azriel's knife, Truth-Teller, looks like the twin of the Starsword, and the Starsword hums in its sheath. Amren recognizes the language Bryce speaks."No one has spoken that language in this world for fifteen thousand years." She calls the Starsword by another name, Gwydion.

Then Feyre and Rhysand arrive. Bryce thinks Rhys looks like Ruhn. The scene ends with "Hello, Bryce Quinlan. My name is Rhysand."

Bryce in Prythian

This is the part ACOTAR readers need most.

Once Bryce can understand their language, she tells them about Midgard, and Amren realizes the Asteri sound exactly like the Daglan, who once ruled Prythian.

Bryce escapes into tunnels, following the star on her chest. Nesta catches up with her, and Azriel secretly follows. Then Bryce makes her move. She deliberately leaves a blood trail so the Middengard Wyrm will go after Nesta and Azriel while she slips away. Nesta puts on the Mask, raises a skeleton, and kills it. Azriel talks her out of the Mask by naming the people she loves. Cassian, Gwyn, Emerie, Feyre, Elain, and Nyx.

Nesta tells Bryce she had an eight-pointed star tattoo from a bargain, and it matched the scar on Bryce's chest.

The Star Chamber and Silene

The tunnels lead to a chamber in the Prison, the same place Nesta found the Harp in A Court of Silver Flames. A recording of Silene, Theia's daughter, appears. Azriel says she looks like Rhysand's sister.

Silene's story changes Prythian's history:

  • The Daglan ruled the High Fae for 5,000 years and took a yearly tithe of their power.
  • Theia was enslaved to one of them for a century and learned about the Dread Trove: the Mask, the Harp, the Crown, and the Horn.
  • Theia and Fionn Made the twin blades with the Cauldron, overthrew the Daglan, and became High Queen and High King.
  • Fionn favored their daughter Helena as heir, so Theia and Pelias killed him.
  • On Midgard, the Asteri turned out to be the same beings as the Daglan. Pelias had been secretly working with Rigelus.
  • Theia split her power three ways. Silene took the Harp and Truth-Teller back to Prythian. Her sister Helena stayed on Midgard. Pelias killed Theia and forced Helena to marry him.

The big takeaways for ACOTAR; the Prison was once a court of its own, usually called the Dusk Court. And Silene married the son of a High Lord, who became High Lord of the Night Court, and their first son was born with starlight. Combine that with Azriel's comment, and the book strongly implies Rhysand descends from her.

Bryce absorbs the third of Theia's power that Silene left there. Under the chamber, she finds Vesperus, an Asteri and Theia's former mistress, asleep in a quartz coffin. Bryce frees her, and Nesta kills her with Ataraxia.

Bryce takes Truth-Teller from Azriel without asking and goes back to Midgard with both blades.

The Mask Loan

Later, from Midgard's Northern Rift, Bryce opens a portal straight into Nesta's living room and asks to borrow the Mask. She offers her mother and stepfather, Ember and Randall, as collateral. Nesta hands it over, and the portal closes with Bryce's parents on the Prythian side.

Back on Midgard

Lidia frees Hunt, Ruhn, and Baxian from the Asteri's dungeon. Ithan kills Sabine and becomes Prime of the wolves. Ithan and Hypaxia destroy the Under-King, and Hypaxia becomes head of the House of Flame and Shadow. Ruhn kills the Autumn King with the Starsword. On Avallen, Bryce claims the last third of Theia's power, which Helena had hidden there.

Hunt learns his power was made on purpose by the Princes of Hel, and Prince Apollion calls him son. Hunt burns off his own halo.

How It Ends

The truth about the Asteri is broadcast to Midgard, and Hel's armies come through the Northern Rift to fight the Asteri. Bryce uses the Mask to raise the souls of the Fallen into the Asteri's war machines. She kills the Asteri Polaris, and Lidia burns Pollux to death.

Bryce shoots the firstlight core with a bullet charged with the secondlight of the dead, then pulls Rigelus and the remaining Asteri into a black hole. She's pulled in too. Hunt goes after her wearing the Mask and brings her back, but she's dead. Jesiba gives up her own life so Bryce can return.

The Handoff to Nesta

After the war, with the Northern Rift closed, Bryce opens a portal to the Night Court to bring Ember and Randall home. She returns the Mask and Truth-Teller, and then she gives Nesta the Starsword.

"The age of the Starborn is over on Midgard. It ends with me."

"I think that eight-pointed star was tattooed on you for a reason. Take that sword and go figure out why."

Back on Midgard, Bryce abolishes the Fae monarchy and sets up a senate. Bryce and Hunt are mates and married, Ruhn and Lidia are together, and Bryce inherits the Library of Parthos from Jesiba and opens it to the public.

What Crescent City Changes for ACOTAR

Here's what to keep in mind while you read A Court of Splintered Harmony:

  • Nesta now holds the Starsword (Gwydion), and the Mask and Truth-Teller are back in the Night Court. Gwydion and Truth-Teller are twin blades, and the prophecy says something happens when they're reunited.
  • Nesta's eight-pointed star. Bryce told her it was there for a reason, and the star also marks the chamber in the Prison.
  • The Prison was once the Dusk Court, and Rhys is strongly implied to be Silene's descendant.
  • The Daglan and the Asteri are the same kind of being. Prythian's ancient rulers and Midgard's false gods were one and the same.
  • The Dread Trove has a history now. Theia learned about the Mask, the Harp, the Crown, and the Horn while she was enslaved.

Crescent City Recap FAQ

Do you need to read Crescent City before A Court of Splintered Harmony?

It isn't required, but it helps. House of Flame and Shadow reveals that the Prison was once the Dusk Court, strongly implies that Rhysand descends from Theia's daughter Silene, and ends with Nesta holding the Starsword.

Which ACOTAR characters appear in Crescent City?

At the end of House of Sky and Breath, Bryce meets Azriel, Amren, Nesta, Cassian, Feyre, and Rhysand. In House of Flame and Shadow, Rhysand, Azriel, Amren, and Nesta appear in the Prythian chapters, and Cassian is there for the final handoff.

What is Gwydion?

Gwydion is the Prythian name for the Starsword, Ruhn's sword in Crescent City. It's the twin of Azriel's knife, Truth-Teller. At the end of House of Flame and Shadow, Bryce gives it to Nesta.

What is the Dusk Court?

It's what the Prison used to be: a court of its own, before it became a prison. Silene, Theia's daughter, left her recording in a chamber there. She married into the Night Court, and the book strongly implies Rhysand is her descendant.

Who are the Asteri and the Daglan?

They're the same kind of being. The Daglan ruled the High Fae in Prythian until Theia and Fionn overthrew them. On Midgard, the same beings ruled as the Asteri and fed on people's power until Bryce defeated them.

Where is the Mask now?

Back in the Night Court. Nesta lent it to Bryce in House of Flame and Shadow, and after the war Bryce returned it, along with Truth-Teller, when she came back for her parents.
