Wow, this book hit me hard. It’s gut-wrenching and emotional, but in the best way. Kristin Hannah has such a gift for taking historical events and making them feel personal and real.
Frankie is an incredible character—brave, idealistic, and flawed in all the ways that make her so relatable. Watching her grow from a sheltered young nursing student to a woman who faces the horrors of war head-on was inspiring. Her story is heartbreaking, especially when she returns home and realizes that the real battle is far from over.
What really stood out to me was how this book highlights the role women played in the Vietnam War. It’s a part of history we don’t hear about often, and I loved how Hannah brought these unsung heroes to life. The friendships Frankie forms with her fellow nurses were some of my favorite parts—they were deep, complicated, and so real.
The writing is vivid and immersive, as you’d expect from Kristin Hannah. She doesn’t sugarcoat anything—the brutal realities of war, the trauma of coming home, and the way women’s contributions have been overlooked are all explored with honesty and heart. At the same time, it’s a story full of hope, resilience, and the power of human connection.
I will say that while I absolutely loved The Women, I didn’t connect with it on the same personal level as I did with The Wishing Game. That said, this book deserves every bit of its five stars—it’s powerful, thought-provoking, and unforgettable.
