Synopsis (spoiler free!)
Andi Glover has always preferred books to reality. Growing up with unconventional parents and a conventional sister who couldn’t leave home fast enough, Andi found solace in fiction—any fiction. But while books are wonderful companions, they aren’t the best teachers for navigating the real world.
When Andi lands a live-in position at the mysterious Templewood Hall, working for the eccentric Lady Dawe and her enigmatic son Hugo, she begins to wonder if she’s stepped into the pages of one of her beloved gothic novels. The estate’s grand yet eerie halls are full of secrets: ghostly apparitions, a missing heir, and bumps in the night that make Andi question whether she’s living a romance or a whodunnit.
As the mysteries mount, Andi finds herself drawn to the inscrutable gardener, who always seems to appear just when she needs him most. Can Andi navigate the twists and turns of this real-life gothic tale to uncover the truth about Templewood Hall—and maybe even find her own happily-ever-after?
My Review of Happily Ever After by Jane Lovering
Lovering’s signature wit and warmth shine through in Happily Ever After. The novel’s blend of humor, heart, and suspense is engaging from start to finish. Andi is a relatable and endearing protagonist, with her bookish nature serving as both a strength and a weakness. Her journey from fiction-obsessed dreamer to someone willing to confront the complexities of real life is entertaining.
The supporting characters are equally well-drawn, from the eccentric Lady Dawe to the enigmatic Hugo and the mysterious yet oddly dependable gardener. Each character adds depth to the story and keeps readers guessing about their true motives and roles in the unfolding drama!
At its core, Happily Ever After is a fun quick read. I feel like the story was rushed in places especially the ending. But it is a quick entertaining read!
The gothic elements—creaky halls, family secrets, ghostly sightings—are handled with just the right touch of drama and humor, ensuring the story remains engaging without becoming overly dark. And of course, the slow-burn romance adds a delightful layer to the story!

This charming romantic comedy focuses on a book-obsessed heroine navigating real-life challenges and relationships, much like Andi’s journey. It’s a delightful mix of humor, self-discovery, and love.
The House in the Cerulean Sea
by TJ Klune
While not gothic, this book has a whimsical and heartwarming tone that mirrors the blend of humor and emotional depth found in Happily Ever After. It also features a protagonist stepping out of their comfort zone and finding unexpected connections.
Northanger Abbey
By Jane Austen
I suspect that this classic novel inspired many elements of Happily Ever After! It features a bookish heroine, Catherine Morland, whose love for gothic novels leads her to misinterpret the events around her during a stay at a mysterious estate.
