Libraries are so much more than shelves full of books—they’re vibrant community hubs, safe spaces for learning, gathering, and growing. Whether you’re a lifelong book lover, a student looking for study space, or a parent attending story times, your local library likely plays a quiet but powerful role in your life. And now more than ever, they need our support!

Here are five easy, meaningful ways to show your library some love—and help keep this essential community resource thriving.

1. Get a Library Card & Actually Use It

It sounds simple, but checking out books, eBooks, or audiobooks—even once in a while—makes a real difference! Every time you borrow something, you’re showing your library is valued. Libraries use circulation numbers and program attendance to justify funding. Your use = your voice!

Not a big reader? Many libraries also offer streaming services, maker spaces, classes, and museum passes—all free with your card!

2. Donate Books, Money, or Supplies

Many libraries accept gently used books for resale, which helps fund events and new acquisitions. Monetary donations are always welcome and often tax-deductible.

Not sure what to give? Ask if your library needs office supplies, craft materials, or tech tools for programs.

Even small contributions go a long way when budgets are tight.

We recently reached out to our kid's school and donated a bunch of gently used books and games ahead of our move!

3. Volunteer Your Time

Got a few hours to spare? Most libraries are thrilled to have extra hands helping with:

  • shelving and organizing books
  • prepping crafts for kids’ programs
  • tutoring or reading with students
  • supporting special events

Stop by the front desk and ask if they need volunteers. You’d be surprised how impactful just a couple of hours a month can be.

Our kids may also be able to do this through their school. Our daughter loves getting to help in her school library before school!

4. Spread the Word—Online and In Real Life

Love your library? Talk about it! Share upcoming events on your Instagram stories, leave a glowing Google review, or tag the library in your latest book haul. Word-of-mouth is powerful—especially in your own circle.

Don’t forget to recommend the library to parents, students, or anyone on a tight budget. Free resources can be a lifeline.

5. Attend Events and Workshops

Libraries offer everything from author talks to resume workshops to art classes—and they need community engagement to keep those programs going. Your attendance matters. Showing up not only supports the library, but it also shows sponsors and officials that these offerings are important and valued by the community!

Plus, all those FREE activities are such a great way to save money and meet new people!

Show Your Library Some Love

Your library is more than a building full of books—it’s a vital piece of your community. When you support it, you're helping create access to learning, connection, and opportunity for everyone.

So whether it’s checking out a novel, showing up to story time, or donating an extra pack of printer paper, your actions matter!
