Discover 20 classic and modern middle grade books to read with your kids that build empathy, spark curiosity, and create a lifelong love of reading.

Why Reading Classics With Kids Matters

It has always been our goal to raise kids who enjoy reading not just because books are fun and magical, but because stories help children develop empathy and emotional intelligence. Books open windows into different lives and cultures, and I believe that building empathy through reading is more important now than ever.

This year, I’ve created a list of 20 classics and modern must-reads that I’ll be enjoying with my middle grade kids. Some we’ll read one-on-one, others we’ll read aloud together. Since kids are different, my son is ready for Night, while my daughter will be tackling The War That Saved My Life instead. This flexibility allows us to meet each child where they are, while still sharing the experience of great works of literature!

Most of the books on this list are available through Kindle Unlimited (KU)! If you’re not already a member, you can sign up here and start reading today! It’s one of my favorite ways to keep my kids’ shelves (and mine!) stocked with incredible stories without breaking the budget.

Why These Books Matter

This list isn’t just about checking boxes of “must-reads.” It’s about the conversations these stories spark around our dinner table, in the car, and before bed. Books help kids see the world from perspectives far different from their own, which I believe is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. These are the kids of books that build empathy in kids!

By mixing heavy, history-driven classics with magical adventures and modern classics, I hope to raise readers who not only love books but who also understand the world a little better because of them!
